Veiled

Veiled: not openly or directly expressed; masked; disguised; hidden; obscure: a veiled threat

All too often the process of overcoming a dominant force is overlooked, and we are led to believe once they leave, we are finally set free physically and mentally from what we are trying to escape. However, the reality is far from the fairytale ending we have been lead to believe. I want to approach the subject of domestic abuse and its lingering effects by highlighting the internal struggle experienced in the aftermath of  separation.

‘Veiled’ embodies my experience of leaving a toxic relationship and the complicated healing process involved. My work is a representation of the mental process we go through when trying to escape being controlled and the residual effects it has on us. Leaving is often just the beginning of a difficult and uphill battle to break free, but there is hope, and the knowledge that you are not alone is what helps push through and begin the process of a new life.

I plan to incorporate items that once symbolised my marriage and repurpose them as a visual representation of endings and new beginnings. Inspired by the Renaissance period, its ideology of humanism, use of light and dark, and the concept of rebirth, I intend to create a series of images that highlight the emotional journey that is usually suppressed and often unspoken.
